The Sarplaninac is a medium-sized breed with the body slightly longer than tall. The chest is deep and broad. The muzzle is medium length and tapers to a point and the nose is most commonly black. The eyes are dark and almond-shaped with a keen expression. The tail is bushy and carried at a slight curve.

The Sarplaninac averages between 22 and 24 inches in height and weighs between 55 and 88 pounds. The life expectancy of this breed is 11 to 13 years.

The Sarplaninac has a double coat that is waterproof. The undercoat is abundant and dense. The top coat is long – about 4 inches in length. There is feathering on the underbelly and legs that gives this breed a larger appearance.
