During the 1930s, the Russian military sought a working dogs puppies for sale that would become part of the national security force. In 2001, the dog was accepted in the Miscellaneous Class of the AKC. The dog entered the Working Group in July of 2004.

An owner will find the BRT to be a calm, confident, and very courageous dog full of self-assurance and even a bit aloof toward strangers. Because of their intelligence, they excel in any obedience or agility competition.

The animal will range in size from twenty-six inches to 30 inches tall and will weigh between eighty and one hundred thirty pounds on average. The dog only comes in black and may have a few grey hairs. Brushing is required and should be done several times per week. The soft undercoat does shed. It is not recommended to bathe the animal unless he is dirty as this dilutes the natural oil in his coat.
