The Sage Ashayeri is an ancient shepherd breed used by the nomads of Western and Central Iran to defend their flocks from wolves and bears, to guard the family tents of the nomads, and to hunt wild boar, wolf, and bear in packs. These nomads, known as the Bakhtiari and Qashqui tribes, travel hundreds of miles twice a year (before summer and before winter). The exact origin of the Sage Ashayeri breed is unknown. The ancestry of this breed is also unknown. The Sage Ashayeri has not been recognized by any major kennel clubs.

The Sage Ashayeri is a small working shepherd breed rarely exceeding 20 inches in height, smaller than most dog breeds native to the region. This breed is highly valued for their speed, courage, and resilience.

The Sage Ashayeri has two coat types - smooth and medium-length. The Sage Ashayeri used by the Qashqui tribe has a smooth coat. The Sage Ashayeri used by the Bakhtiari tribe has the medium-length coat.

There are some physical differences between the Sage Ashayeri dogs kept by each tribe as well. The smooth coated Sage Ashayeri used by the Qashqai tribe has more the appearance of a Border Collie, while the medium-length coat Sage Ashayeri used by the Bakhtiari tribe has more the appearance of a Mastiff. Some believe that the smooth coated Sage Ashayeri and the medium-length coated Sage Ashayeri should be separated into two different breeds since the two coat types do not interbreed as they were said to have done in the past due to the different routes now traveled by these two tribes.

The coat of the Sage Ashayeri is usually bi-colored in the colors of yellow and white, red and white, brown and white, and black and white (similar to the coat colors of the Border Collie). Solid coat colors are fairly common as well in fawn, brown, and gray. There are also some brindle and tri-color coats as well.

Regardless of the type, the Sage Ashayeri breed has a muscular body, powerful neck, and strong legs. The tail of this breed may or may not be docked.

Some Sage Ashayeri dogs are found in urban areas both inside and outside the country of Iran as guard dogs and family pets – but the majority of this breed can still be found traveling with the nomad tribes.

The Sage Ashayeri is a very alert, reserved and aggressive towards strange people and other dogs. This breed makes an excellent watch dog and guard dog.
