The Schapendoes was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 2006. The American Kennel Club (AKC) listed the Schapendoes as part of the Foundation Stock Service in 2005 – this is the first step in full breed recognition.

The Schapendoes is a medium-sized, long-coated dog known with great endurance, agility, and speed. The abundant amount of hair makes this breed appear larger and broader than they really are. The eyes of the Schapendoes are fairly large, round in shape, dark brown and have an open, honest, and lively expression. The ears are set fairly high, well covered with hair, and hang freely but not close to the head. The tail is long and well feathered.

The Schapendoes averages between 16 to 20 inches in height and weighs between 33 and 40 pounds. The life expectancy of this breed is 14 years. There is no known health problems associated with the Schapendoes; however, do to their heavy coat this breed needs to be watched for signs of overheating.

The Schapendoes has a double coat. The undercoat is dense, woolly, tousled, and has a natural unkempt look. The top coat is dense and lightly waved. The individual hairs are fine and dry and at least 2.5 inches in length. This breed has a definite topknot, mustache, and beard. This breed is considered a low shedder.

The coat colors of the Schapendoes vary but include black, grayish blue, and gray with white markings.
