The Schipperke breed originated in the Flemish Region of Belgium in the early 16th century for the purpose of hunting vermin on river barges and a watchdog. In the Flemish language the word “schip” means boat and is how this breed got its name.
The Schipperke was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1904 as part of the Non-Sporting Group.
The Schipperke has a thickset and cobby body, and a fox-like face. The eyes are small, oval shaped, and have a mischievous expression. The ears are set high on the head and triangular in shape. The tail of the Schipperke is usually docked shortly after birth.
The Schipperke averages between 10 and 13 inches in height and weighs between 12 and 18 pounds.
The life expectancy of this breed is 15 or more years. Health problems associated with the Schipperke include: epilepsy, hip dysplasia, hypothyroid, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), cataracts, and a disease called MPS 111B (Mucopolysaccharidosis) for which there is a genetic test.
The coat color of the Schipperke is black and only black with no markings.
The Schipperke has a double coat. The undercoat is soft and dense. The top coat is medium-length, abundant, straight, short, and slightly harsh to the touch. The coat is very thick around the neck and forms a ruff. This is a very clean breed and pretty much take care of their own grooming though the coat benefits from weekly brushing. This breed is considered an average shedder.
