The Shikoku has a double coat. The undercoat is dense; the outer coat is short, harsh, and straight. The hair on the tail is rather long. The coat benefits from regular grooming. The coat sheds heavily twice a year. Over-bathing may dry out their skin and since this breed does not give off a strong doggy smell, a bath every few months is sufficient.

The coat colors of the Shikoku are sesame (equal parts black and white hairs); black sesame (more black than white hairs), and red sesame (red mixed with black hairs).
