The Southern Hound originated in Britain and is no longer in existence. The exact origins of this breed is unknown but many believe it is a descendent of the Talbot. The exact date of extinction is not known but believed to be sometime in the 19th century. It is believed the Southern Hound was gradually bred in with other hound breeds to the point where they no longer existed.

Based on records and illustrations, it is known the Southern Hound was a tall, heavy dog, with a square head, long ears, and a bony body, rather like the bloodhound or the coonhound in build. It is believed today’s beagle is a bred down version of the Southern Hound with shorter ears. This dog was a scenthound. It was slow, deliberate hunter with a deep voice and commonly used to hunt hares and deer which would be eventually exhausted by a pursuit. It is believed the Southern Hound hunted along with the Foxhound; however, it is believed the Southern Hound fell out of favor with hunters to the Foxhound which is a faster hunter and better suited for shorter hunts.

The coat color of the Southern Hound was mainly white with some tricolor markings.
