The Wetterhoun breed originated at least 400 years ago in Frisian Islands of Holland. This breed has been used hundreds of years to hunt otter on the Frisian Islands. Wetterhoun in the Dutch language means “water dog”.

The Wetterhoun is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but is recognized by the Continental Kennel Club (CKC), National Kennel Club (NKC), American Pet Registry (APRI), American Canine Registry (ACR), and Dog Registry of America (DRA). The Wetterhoun is considered a rare breed outside of its native land of Holland.

The Wetterhoun is a medium sized dog and stands 20-22 inches in height and 30-44 pounds. This breed is very strong, sturdy, and has a great deal of stamina known for working for hours in the water hunting otter. The life expectancy of this breed is 11-15 years. This is a hardy breed, but the Wetterhoun breed is known to suffer from hip dysplasia, epilepsy, or suffer from hair loss.

The coat colors of the Wetterhoun are solid brown, solid black, brown with white markings, or black with white markings. The coat of the Wetterhoun, with the exception of the head and legs, is covered with tight curls of hair which is water repellant which some describe as having a greasy or oily texture. The coat requires very little brushing except during the shedding season when dead hair must be removed. However, the ears should be check periodically to make sure they are clean and free of infection. The Wetterhoun has a large head, squarish body, broad chest, with thin, study legs. The tail of the Wetterhoun is very distinctive, it curls up and forms a semi puff ball on their backs.
