Throughout history these dogs travelled with the caravans of Tibetan sheepherders protecting their flock from wolves or other dangerous prey. This breed traveled with caravans of traders protecting them and guarding their merchandise. They were also used to guard homesteads, often chained to gates. The Tibetan Mastiff was not known to Westerns until the early 1800’s because outsiders were not permitted into the country of Tibet. This breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2006 and classified in the Working Group. This breed also has a known genetic disorder called Canine Inherited Demyelinative Neuropathy (CIDN), a disease that affects the nervous system. This disease appears in puppies and is fatal.
